Celebration of the Florence Convention by UNISCAPE: Renown speakers plead for a landscape of quality.
12 November 2015 - 12 November 2015

Florence, Italy
The 15th anniversary of the Florence Convention (European Landscape Convention), was given due attention by an exquisite selection of speakers in the Aula Magna of the Geography Department of the Florence University.
After an inspired introduction of the book “Per un Paesaggio di Qualità – Dialogo su inadempienze e ritardi nell’attuazione della Convenzione Europea”* by Annalisa Calcagno Maniglio, the Chief Heritage and Landscape Inspector in Lucca, Luigi Ficacci confirmed the difficulties of dealing with landscape in a fragmented multi-layer policy arena.
The UNISCAPE speakers Magnani, Zagari, Ferrara, Campioni and Paolinelli subsequently all contributed to the dialogue with sensible critiques on the role of (lacking) governance in landscape affairs, and suggestions for change in the near future.
It was concluded that although the Florence Convention is very much alive among citizens and in the research community, for proper landscape governance in the spirit of the Convention, effective participatory approaches are still largely deficient. The power of good examples should be better exploited to safeguard the development of a future landscape of quality.
